Ability Solutions is an incorporated Western Australian, not-for-profit, registered charitable organisation which aims to improve the participation by targeting people with disabilities in community life through inclusive practices. Incorporated in July 2000, it was formed as a direct result of research and trial projects conducted by the WA Disabled Sports Association (WADSA). WADSA had been approached for support by some groups including;
· High Care Kids – specifically Heart Camp kids at Fairbridge and the school at Princess Margaret Hospital.
· Incarcerated People with Disabilities: specifically a unit at Casuarina Maximum Security Prison and a group of 15 in minimum security at Bandyup Prison.
· Mental Illness: specifically Schizophrenia Fellowship in Albany and the Forensic Unit at Graylands.
· Aged: specifically aged dementia at Baptist Care homes – Graceford and Grace Haven Homes. Ability Solutions was formed as the appropriate tool for working with these groups. Work continues to varying degrees with each of the four types of groups listed above, in particular mental illness and aged dementia.
· Modified Activity and Adaptive Equipment Program: A significant component for Ability Solutions work is modified activities and adaptive equipment for individuals with high support needs. This includes the research, development, trial and production of prototypes, partnering various companies and volunteers. The modified activities and adaptive equipment are utilised through our projects and with our partners.
Ability Solutions was formed as a more appropriate agency to work with these groups. Work continues to varying degrees with each of the five areas listed above.
Ability Solutions receives no core ongoing funding from government or private entities. All funding is project based. Ability Solutions is careful to select appropriate funding bodies to approach for each proposed project. Once a project concept has been developed, its objectives and target groups are compared to priority areas for potential funders so that the most suitable funding body or bodies for that project are identified.
